The thesis presents a model, suitable for the design of any type of qualification in integrative eGovernment education. The integrative approach combines education of adult learners and students and promotes international cooperation

Research as a Process: A Comparison between Different Research Approaches

    Get PDF
The research process plays a central role in science. To support research and researchers, it is necessary to understand the research process and its phases. Although the literature offers different research processes, these are often focused on specific research paradigms and methods. The aim of this working paper is to define a research process common to different research approaches: behavioral science, design science and action research. The paper reviews research process models from the literature and finally introduces a model of a general research process. The model can be used to further explore the tasks of researchers, with the aim of identifying possibilities of supporting researchers

    Online Impression Management for Scientists

    Get PDF
The aim of the article is to support scientists in managing their online presence. In this article, online presence is considered to be a part of scientists\u27 overall self-presentation strategy, thus necessitating a complex, holistic approach. Therefore self-presentation is first discussed on the basis of the impression management theory by Erving Goffman. Previous empirical studies are then used to apply the theory to the management of Internet presentation, with focus on scientists\u27 professional online presence. Grounded in existing empirical research and using the impression management theory, a framework is derived identifying key issues of the management of scientists\u27 online profiles. The framework is a pragmatic instrument that supports strategic development of scientists Internet presence. At the same time, the identified factors can provide a foundation for structured yet holistic research into online self-presentation

Information Demand on Scientists\u27 Internet Profiles

    Get PDF
Many scientists nowadays choose to create profiles on the Internet and thus present themselves and their work to a worldwide audience. This study examines, how scientists use the existing online profiles when looking for information about their peers. Of particular interest are differences in behavior based on existing interpersonal ties (strong, weak, latent, and absent ties). The study analyzed data from an online survey of 123 European scientists using quantitative association measures and qualitative comparative analysis. The findings show, that the Internet can positively influence the development of social networks within the scientific community. However, the platforms available for presentation online are numerous and the peer audience heterogeneous. While Internet presence can be of advantage for scientists, it should be designed and maintain with deliberation

Studying Research Collaboration: A Literature Review

This working paper offers an annotated bibliography on studies in research collaboration. It identifies different research areas and presents existing research results. The aim of the paper is to provide orientation for researchers interested in approaching this diverse and important research topic

Supporting the Initiation of Research Collaborations

    Get PDF
This paper describes the background, objectives and methods of my doctoral research concerned with the support of the initiation of research collaboration with the help of information and communication technologies. The research is based on the assumption that providing more information about potential partners would lead to better-grounded decisions about collaboration. The purpose of this research is also to support and utilize Open Research. To address these aims, I suggest the design and creation of an ePortfolio that will aggregate information from the Internet, particularly Web 2.0 applications

The Digital Researcher: Exploring the Use of Social Software in the Research Process

    Get PDF
Web 2.0 and social software have long since reached research. Existing examples and even studies show, that researchers use social software during the research process. However, the ways social software can be used to support research work are still not sufficiently explored. In this paper, we suggest that this question can be addresses systematically by means of a simple exploration framework. We base the framework on the research process and the activities connected to it. We use the framework for exemplary consideration of selected social software

Enhancing the Framework for Virtual Collaborative Learning: Comparison of two Case Studies

    Get PDF
This paper describes and discusses \u27Virtual Collaborative Learning\u27 (VCL), a blended learning arrangement developed and used at the Chair of Information Management since 2001. Based on the experiences of the authors with the VCL setting and concentrating on international learning arrangements in higher education, this paper explores two possible ways of setting up VCL projects. Aiming at the further improvement of the framework model, it will be discusses how the determination of the factors \u27roles\u27, \u27tasks\u27 and \u27communication tools\u27 influence supports VCL aims best

Blended-Learning arrangements for higher education in the changing knowledge society

    Get PDF
This paper presents an advanced – international – blended learning arrangement. It has been developed, implemented and reviewed regularly in the last 4 years at the authors’ institution. Instead of referring solely to traditional classroom teaching, we use and continually refine this arrangement in our every-day formal teaching and learning processes at Technische Universitaet Dresden. By this we take into regard the changes induced by the Bologna Roadmap and try better to support its “new” didactical objectives: more interactive and interdisciplinary modules with focus upon the (practical) integration of professional and methodical responsibility, decision-making and soft skills

Qualitative Comparative Analysis in Information Systems and Wirtschaftsinformatik

    Get PDF
The application of scientific methods is an essential element when conducting research. They ensure reproducible results and improve the overall quality of the research projects. The aim of this paper is to introduce a method called Qualitative Comparative Analysis, which is currently nearly unrecognized within our discipline. Being neither a pure quantitative nor qualitative method, it yields potential benefits arising from both research streams. It accommodates answering research questions that simultaneously demand a deep understanding of complex relationships and also require the analysis of more than just a few single cases. The paper gives an introduction to this method and demonstrates its usefulness on the basis of two recently carried out research projects. In the end, the Qualitative Comparative Analysis proves to be a valuable addition to the canon of research methods and enriches the applied character of our discipline by contributing to the improvement of both rigor and relevance
